Configure Outlook Express to be used with IMAP and SSL

This page describes on how to configure Outlook Express to be used with the hostmeister IMAP server.  It includes steps on how to encrypt the traffic between the client and the server using SSL.

If this is the first time you opened Outlook Express you will automatically invoke the account wizard.  If you used OE before on your commuter, the wizard will not start.  The steps to add an account manually or with the wizard are identically.  To invoke the wizard click TOOLS-ACCOUNTS-MAIL

Click the MAIL tab and select ADD and choose MAIL

Enter your first and last name.  This information is used for the FROM field for any emails you may send.  Click NEXT.

Enter your email address as shown in the example.  Make sure your address is entered correctly.  Most accounts hosted with us are configured using your first initial and last name followed by the @ sign and the domain name.  If your name is for example "John Smith" and your domain is sampledomain.com you would enter:

Click NEXT and select IMAP from the server type dropdown, enter in both IMAP and SMTP server fields "mail.hostmeister.com":

Click next, your username should be pre-populated.  Enter your password and check of "Remember password".  Verify that SPA is unchecked and click NEXT.  You may change your password using your web mail account.

Click FINISH.  You will return "Internet Accounts" screen.  Highlight the account you just created and click PROPERTIES:

Select the SERVERS tab and check of the box "My server requires authentication".  Verify that under SETTINGS the button "Use same settings as for my incoming server" is selected.

Select the ADVANCED tab and enable secure communications using SSL.  The SMTP port must be manually set to port 465

Click the IMAP tab and change the Sent folder location to "Sent":

Click OK and CLOSE to finish the account wizard.  Outlook Express will prompt you to download all folders from the server.

Click yes and view the available folders.  On new accounts you will see 3 folders as pictured below.  if you subscribed to the optional AntiSpam filtering you will also see a SPAM folder.  Select all folders you wish to synchronize and select OK

You will be able to view your emails after Outlook Express has synchronized with the IMAP server.  Note that your emails will arrive under the mail.hostmeister.com account and not the local folders inbox.

Unlike with regular POP3 email accounts IMAP is server centric.  All your emails are stored on the server.  So you can set up the same email account on your office desktop PC, your laptop and at home.  On each computer the folders and the content will appear identical.  Emails sent from the home PC can also be viewed in the SENT folder from the laptop.  All emails are also available using a web browser from anywhere.  Simply go to https://mail.hostmeister.com and log in to your account.
